Basoeki Abdullah was born 1915 in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. The love for Art runs thick in his blood, his father was the artist Abdullah Soerjo Soebroto (1878 - 1942) who was also a dancer. In 1935, Basoeki Abdullah was awarded a prestigious Art scholarship to study for 2 years at the Academie Voor Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Visual Arts) in the Netherlands. After graduation, he travelled around Europe to cities in Italy and France in order to further his knowledge of the arts. Between 1962 to 1976, he lived in Thailand and served as a painter for the royal family. Later, back in Indonesia he joined the Poetera, People' s Activity Center in Batavia, Jakarta. In his lifetime, Basoeki was awarded many times, and had participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad, and is considered one of Indonesia' s finest masters.
