Ling Jian

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Following his critically acclaimed “Communist Sister” series, Ling Jian has continued exploring issues concerning communism and the role of women in a changing Chinese society. Through his paintings, Ling Jian also explores the evolution of Chinese cultural identity as a whole. Beautiful women are depicted in a provocative and highly sexual style, this contrasts sharply with the conservative and restrained image of the true communist female soldier. Indeed, Ling Jians works are replete with contrasts; Beauty and love contrast with violence and war, fragility and femininity contrast with power and masculinity. The paintings themselves are executed with incredible skill, in a highly realistic manner. Despite this semblance of reality however, Ling Jian’s subjects appear to be in a surreal world, populated by angels and rifles. Having participated in many solo and group exhibitions worldwide, Ling Jian is fast being recognised s one of China’s greatest talents.

Leonardo Da Vinci

A painter, a sculptor, an architect and an engineer, Leonardo Da Vinci's numerous skills have earned him the title of renaissance master. Da Vinci's fascination with science and his in-depth study of human anatomy aided him in mastering the realist art form. While Leonardo's counterparts were known to create static figures in their works, Leonardo always tried to incorporate movement and expression into his own paintings. All the personages in his works are painted with great accuracy and detail that it is sometimes said that Da Vinci painted from the bones outward.

Having lived until the age of 67, Leonardo experienced a very long career that was filled with times during which the painter was celebrated, but at times he was also humiliated and cast away. His life experiences all influenced his works and often, his paintings never left the sketchpad, or were only partially completed, as Leonardo often abandoned his commissions in order to flee from social situations.

Today, there are records of only few Da Vinci paintings, and 20 notebooks. Thankfully, these works have been preserved over the hundreds of years since Leonardo's time, and while his works are scattered in different areas of the globe, everyone can enjoy Da Vinci through the numerous books detailing his life, or through any of the many Da Vinci posters that have been printed.

A well known master in the history of art, Leonard Da Vinci is renown by people all over the map, and those of us who cannot travel to view the true works that the genius created can at least bring home a piece of him when we buy Da Vinci posters or prints. His most famous paintings, and the most popular Da Vinci posters around, are those of The Last Supper, The Mona Lisa and Vitruvian Man: The Proportions of the Human Figure. These works, displayed in Milan and Paris respectively, are among the most influential works ever created.

Beyond the purchase of a book of paintings or Da Vinci posters or prints, there are many resources and much literature detailing Leonardo's life. But for those who want a quick study, The Leonardo Timeline offers a glance through the artist's life, while the biography section of this site offers a more detailed view of Leonardo Da Vinci and what shaped the man and his many talents.

Vladimir Vojvodic

Painter, Vladimir Vojvodic was born in Sabac, in 1958. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1985. Vladimir lives and works in Sabac, Serbia.
For many years he was experimenting with different techniques and mediums. Now, he concentrates on oil painting and prints in their most classical sense.
He also took part in many group exhibitions, biennials and art colonies in the country and abroad.
He exhibited in five cities and his paintings and prints live in more than a hundred places all over the World.

PAINTING AS AN IMPULSE

With Vladimir Vojvodic's paintings, the observer can see, feel and discover what painting really is. These paintings are expressions of calmness, but also of a spiritual adventure, craft, and show his passion and love for painting.
They are essential definitions of what painting can and should be. As a painter who can paint well, he can make an artistically challenging scene out of everything, just like the old masters: a painting with all its complicated elements and levels. It may seem to an untrained eye that some of his paintings are very skilfully analyzed photographs of landscapes, or paintings of nature by memory, but they are just pure artistic solutions brought to the abstract. Vojvodic explores the colour, light, space, composition, local tone, shade and cast shade, and details, in the scenes which bring the joys of painting closer to an observer.
Harsh, but fluid at the same time, this kind of painting brings up emotions and caresses the senses. The world of herbs, meadows, flowers, bushes, trees, forest clearings and paths, cherry orchards and shadowy skies, is full of flavours and sounds of nature, those distant and woven ones. His paintings are the simplest and the most universal, as much as the art of landscape painting allows. They are common places where atmosphere, densities and characters are hidden.
This painter believes that all exaggerations in art are signs of weakness. In that sense, Vojvodic finds a limit in creation, an ideal spiritual remoteness in painting, which is in accordance with the closeness with the nature. As well as chamber music or poetry, these paintings awake the personal and the deepest: memories, dreams, joys, and sadness… Can we ask for more from art? With Vladimir Vojvodic's works, we feel the truth of art – celebration and peaceful mind, quietness and abstractness.

Wu Jianjun

Thursday, July 8, 2010

Wu Jianjun, graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, has been drawing the attention of many arts lovers in recent years. The series of ‘Body Pattern’ looks like a human being distorted to a mass of bones, with bright fiery yellow and green colors, audiences are imploded into the most inner feelings of childhood nightmares. Explaining why he chooses this theme, the artist, Wu Jianjun, 42, says ‘this series of paintings conjure up images of people who are cooped up in a pressurized society and desire freedom. These exaggerated bodies are representation of the spirits of the human being under various emotional states. They are anxious, frightened, shocked, dismayed, sad and horrified.’ The artist is aware of this resonance and seeks to reveal and release these emotions through visual effect.

Wu Jianjun has always been passionate and amazed by the physique of human body. In his paintings, he transforms psychological turmoil onto his canvases, capturing a wide intensity of emotion and facets of the inner life of himself and others. He has always been very interested and intuitive to body language, observing people’s posture and gestures for many years, including people with whom he is not familiar. He is one of few of artists who explore human being’s inner world through the bodies’ perspective. He believes the body reflects the human being’s inner world more than the face does.

Chinese contemporary art is becoming bizarre and getting more attention. Artist Wu Jianjun, confines himself to a few bold colors and shapes, leaving many people insecure and uneasy. His painting has raised a lot of collectors’ eyebrows.

YU FAN

About the Artist

Yu Fan is a well known Chinese artist who works with sculpture. His installation Horses is made up of four galloping horse sculptures, each with a different pose, installed at the east gate of the Shanghai Art Museum, creating a sense of space-time inversion. Through this work, the artist attempts to stimulate viewers imaginations and stimulate old memories of the building housing the Museum. The work also invites viewers to interact with the public space. With these horses running on the track once again, people can’t help but ask: Do the horses play the role of hosts or guests? (Note that the site of the museum used to be a racetrack.) The viewers and horses all seem to be transported back in history, becoming a part of a 'surprising dream'

UNMASK

UNMASK was established in Beijing in 2001 and is made up of the following 3 artists:

Liu Zhan, Born in Henan Luo Yang, China, 1976
Kuang Jun, Born in Jiangxi Ping Xiang, China, 1978
Tan Tian Wei, Born in Hunan Changde, China, 1976

All three graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, in 2002
UNMASK is a prime example of artists who are primarily interested in creating a genuine philosophy of art, in proposing new ideas and visions, rather than simply replicating the status quo. In their current works, UNMASK play on people’s perceptions of normality. We are programmed by the “norms” of everyday life to expect certain things. Therefore, when UNMASK present us with mere fragments of sculptures, our minds alter these “abnormal” images into ones with which we are more familiar, effectively filling in the blanks. UNMASK leaves it to our own preconceptions to change their works within our minds, forming images which we find “acceptable

Wang Luyan

Born: Beijing, 1956
Lives and works in: Beijing
Graduated from Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou, 1988

Wang Luyan has never been primarily interested in public plaudits for his art. In fact, he stopped exhibiting altogether in the mid-1990’s rather than adapt his works to comply with the popular demand for Western influenced artworks based on predictable themes of Chinese revolution and politics. Now that the artistic environment in China has changed, Wang Luyan believes that there is once more “soil” in which his ideas can take root. Through his unique and distinctive style, Wang’s critical voice can now once again be heard

Qin Fengling

Qin Fengling was born in Beijing in 1957. She is a self-taught artist. In 1985, she began working with oil and acrylic on canvas.

Qin Fengling has developed her own unique style of painting and found her own art language.. Ignoring traditionally accepted methods, she creates pieces that can only be described as “sculpture on canvas”. Qin Fengling forms figures by squeezing colours directly from tubes onto her canvas, thereby effectively painting and sculpting her three-dimensional characters at the same time. This technique lends Qin Fengling’s work an originality and uniqueness that very few artists can claim. She takes a style of individuation, an admiring personality of freedom, independence and creativity. Her attitude toward art has preserved her active, struggling, modest and optimistic spirit.

Chen Wenling

Chen Wenling is well known for his highly distinctive sculptures which often feature a pig or other animal personified to form a grotesque commentary on modern consumerist society. His style is raw and to some even repulsive, fullness of form takes on a special kind of strength. Countless shapes come together irrationally, forcing the viewer to fall into an unaccountable raptive. In Chen Wenling’s idea, the very “unacceptability” of his works is where their strength lies. His sculptures have the power to affect the viewer deeply and whether you are enchanted or disturbed by them, they are always thought provoking.

antonio Blanco

Antonio Blanco was born on September 15, 1911, in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Both of his parents were Spanish. Blanco was educated at the American Central School in Manila. After completing high school in Manila, Blanco studied at the National Academy of Art in New York under Sidney Dickinson. During those early formative years, Blanco concentrated on the human form, fascinated by the female body more than any other subject matter. To further his studies and ignite his traveling spirit, he traveled extensively throughout the world before he finally landed in Bali in 1952. Blanco and his Balinese wife, the celebrated dancer Ni Ronji, lived in their mountain retreat, barely leaving it for the world outside. Following a brief trip to the United States, where Blanco acquired many new collectors, the couple never left their fantasy home again. Living in serene surroundings with his four children, Tjempaka, Mario, Orchid and Maha Devi, Bali became Blanco's center. He was fascinated by the island and completely captivated by its charm. Blanco lived and worked in his magical hilltop home until his death in 1999.

Su Xinping 苏新平
b. 1960, Jining, Inner Mongolia

About the Artist

Su Xinping established self-consciousness and his own subjectivity, and defined his self-identity. In face, seld-identity is two-way confirmation; it is the identifying of not only one's self, but also of the relation between oneself and the other. Within this double relationship, each individual is concerned with himself and makes reference to the other. Even the most immanent individual subjectivity is linked with the other, and with the public. Su Xinping's works in the early 90's transformed the relationship between the artist, the painting and the audience into an intimate relation between the heart and an individual interested in humanity, self recognition, and sympathy. In the process of presenting the immanent spiritual world of an individual, Su Xinping allows us to participate in the conscious activity of the artist himself.
